We’re here to share some Myth VS Reality content-
We first posted these as Instagram Stories back in January 2022, but it’s now here to stay on our blog!

Our next Myth VS Reality topic is all about misconceptions about acne.

As a recap, what does the word “myth” even mean? “Myth” means: a widely held but false belief or idea. A misconception, a misbelief. This week, let’s go over 8 myths about acne, and how Aura Nur can help you!

1. The Myth: Only Teenagers Can Get Acne And Pimples

Reality: Sure, we often see that it’s teenagers that get acne frequently. However, they are not the only ones who can get it. You can get acne at any age, even as adults! Acne appears when oil (sebum) clogs the pores on your skin, which then becomes inflamed. Hormonal changes, irregular lifestyle and eating habits, inadequate water intake, pollution, pregnancy and menopause can cause acne too.

2. The Myth: Adult acne is different from teen acne.

Reality: There’s really no difference between teen and adult acne. You might think that products for acne-prone skin are made for teens only, but they should work for anybody!

3. The Myth: Stress Causes Acne

Reality: No, stress does not cause acne, but it can worsen it.

4. The Myth: Squeezing and popping acne will clear it quickly

Reality: No! Popping and squeezing can make your acne more noticeable, or cause permanent scars and infections.

5. The Myth: Acne will clear on its own / You will outgrow the acne phase

Reality: Acne won’t typically go away on its own. Get the right treatment to prevent its growth!

6. The Myth: Exfoliating, washing or scrubbing my skin frequently will clear acne quickly

Reality: It won’t! Exfoliating or scrubbing your skin could make acne worse if you’re doing it harshly or frequently, as it can cause inflammation. Washing your face several times a day can rub away the natural oils, which can irritate your skin further. Cleansing your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser and warm (not hot!) water is adequate enough.

7. The Myth: Wearing Make-Up Causes Acne

Reality: False! Wearing make-up won’t irritate your skin if you’re using products that aren’t clogging your pores. Sticking to a daily cleansing routine and keeping your make-up brushes clean can help prevent breakouts.

8. The Myth: Eating chocolate and greasy foods causes acne too

Reality: Eating small amounts won’t cause acne, but if you’re eating it everyday, it probably will! However, greasy foods don’t cause acne. Instead, other foods like dairy, refined grains / carbohydrates, foods rich in Omega-6 fats and sugary treats can trigger acne if eaten frequently.

If you think that a particular food causes you to break out, then by all means, you can try and stop eating it for a while to see what happens.

Overall, acne is more often caused by hormones and genetics. While it can take a while for it to clear, don’t give up just yet! Using the right products, getting treatment, maintaining a well-balanced lifestyle and diet can help clear your skin.
