Myth VS Reality: Cleanser Edition

We’re here to share some Myth VS Reality content-
We first posted these as Instagram Stories back in January 2022, but it’s now here to stay on our blog!

First of all, what does the word “myth” even mean?
“Myth” means: a widely held but false belief or idea. A misconception, a misbelief.

Now, we know that there’s a lot of skin care myths (misconceptions) floating about the internet, but are all of them false? This week, let’s go over 6 myths about Facial Cleansers and Cleansing that you should know about!

1. The Myth: Dermatologist-tested” on a packaging means a dermatologist recommends or makes a trustworthy product.

Reality: Yes, it’s False.

It’s usually a marketing claim- “Dermatologist Tested” is not an official certification, it just means that at least one dermatologist did test the product. It doesn’t mean the FDA, or any other organisation, endorses the product. Always identify the source of the endorsement, and it’s up to you to believe whether or not it’s suitable for you.

2. The Myth: “Hot Water is Good for My Skin!”

Reality: It’s False! Use warm water, not hot, when washing your face.

Hot water could damage your skin by stripping it of its natural, protective barrier and drying it out removes oils and natural moisturisers from your skin, which can make your skin dry and itchy. A good way to tell if the water you’re bathing or cleansing with is too hot? If your skin is red after rinsing, the water you used was too hot.

3. The Myth: “My Skin Feels Tight, That’s Good!”

Reality: It’s False! Many people think “tight” means your skin’s squeaky clean. However, tight skin means the oily protective layer of the skin is too dry, or your cleanser is too harsh for your face.

4. The Myth: “Double-cleansing strips the skin of moisture.”

Reality: If you’re doing it everyday, yes, it probably will. However, we advise to do it moderately, perhaps 3 days a week, rather than doing it everyday. If you use gentle cleansers, your skin shouldn’t face any issues.

Double Cleansing is a cleansing method that uses two types of cleansers:

  1. an oil based cleanser that removes oil based impurities such as makeup, sebum, etc;

  2. and a water based cleanser removes water based impurities such as sweat and dirt.

This method ensures that both types of impurities are removed from your skin, and your face gets the deepest, gentlest clean possible.

5. The Myth: “I shouldn’t use an oil cleanser if I have oily skin.”

Reality: Oil cleansers benefit all types of skin. If you struggle with oily skin, using an oil cleanser is even more important; it’s an effective way to clear oil-based impurities produced by oily skin. The right cleansing oils shouldn’t clog or congest your pores- they should make dirt and makeup easier to remove while also being gentle on the skin. So, it’s False.

6. The Myth: “I don’t need to oil cleanse if I don’t wear makeup”

Reality: That’s False! Oil cleansers are amazing makeup removers, yes, BUT they do so much more than just that. There are impurities other than makeup that oil cleansers are great at clearing, such as excess sebum and various other pollutants that build up on your skin throughout the day.
