Benefits of Turmeric in Skincare

Turmeric, or also referred to as "Indian saffron", is a plant that only grows to a height of about three feet and produces a flower as well as an underground stalk known as a rhizome. The rhizome, which resembles ginger in appearance, is the stem from which the brilliant bright yellow turmeric spice is produced.

Asia is the home of the curcuma longa plant, which produces turmeric. This spice is frequently used in cooking, but it also has medical properties that’s used in supplements, and skin care products. One example would be turmeric face masks, they’re packed with antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and it’s gaining popularity to aid with specific skin issues without the risk of chemicals.

Here’s 3 potential health benefits of turmeric for your skin,
and some of the negative side effects to watch out for.

1. Heals acne, scarring and treats Psoriasis and Eczema

As turmeric is anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antibacterial, it will calm inflamed areas on skin, prevent or clear the clogging of pores, and stop acne-causing bacteria from growing.

If there’s any wounds, curcumin found in turmeric can also heal it by decreasing inflammation, hence why it’s known to reduce the appearance of acne scars.

2. Lightens hyperpigmentation, brightens skin

Hyperpigmentation occurs when you have patches of skin that are darker than the normal surrounding tissue. As turmeric is also rich with antioxidants, which can lighten pigmentation, using a turmeric-based product regularly can help spots or dark circles fade away for an even-toned, brighter skin.

You may notice that turmeric also revives dull skin, bringing out a natural glow.

3. Anti-ageing & Wrinkle treatment

Turmeric is known to boost collagen production and form a new skin layer, which minimises the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, enhancing the texture of the skin overall.

Exposure to the sun, pollution and external irritants may irritate your skin, but antioxidants in the turmeric will provide protection from further damage. That doesn’t mean that you can skip wearing SPF though- wear that SPF!

A homemade turmeric mask is worth exploring and trying if you’re seeking for a natural face mask to help ease worries about inflammation and discomfort. It may take some time to notice the full effects of turmeric, so it’s crucial to use it for a few weeks before seeing any results.

Any negative effects?

Now, if you’re using a turmeric-based product such as a face mask, do note to not leave it on for any longer than 10 minutes, as it may leave a yellow stain on your skin.

Before trying out a turmeric product, do a small patch test on your arm to ensure you’re not allergic to it!
