Benefits of Jojoba Oil in Skincare

A common ingredient found in body lotions, face moisturisers, shampoos and conditioners, the jojoba oil is a part of many skin care routines- it can be used on skin, hair and nail cuticles, or as a remedy for acne, dry skin, and other skin issues!

Jojoba oil comes from the Jojoba plant that grows in North America. The nuts produced from the plant have numerous medicinal benefits, which is usually made into an oil; and because the oil is so soft, it can be used as a carrier oil for blending other essential oils, or it can also be used on its own.

So, what are the benefits of jojoba oil, and why is it a popular skincare ingredient?

1. It moisturises dry skin and is noncomedogenic

Jojoba oil is a popular moisturiser due to its ability to act like it’s part of our skin’s natural oils; apply it right after cleansing and your skin will be tricked into thinking it has produced enough oil!

If you’re worried that slathering oil on your face will cause breakouts, don’t worry- it doesn’t clog your pores at all. Apart from it being great for skin, it’s also a great moisturiser for dry chapped lips; it can be used on its own, or you may find it already mixed in lip balms.

2. It helps soothe sunburn

When Vitamin E, a strong antioxidant present in jojoba oil, is combined with other antioxidants, it can shield your skin from sun damage. Jojoba oil found in sunscreens will restore Vitamin E, add moisture, and promote healing to soothe symptoms of sunburn, such as skin peeling and dehydration.

3. It controls sebum production in oily and acne-prone skin

The Jojoba oil isn’t only for dry skin- it can also reduce acne by controlling oil production and preventing bacteria growth.

It’s anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and has antioxidants, and your skin will remain well hydrated and your sebaceous glands will cut back on producing excess sebum with jojoba oil’s moisturising effects.

4. Heals wounds, scars, and treats acne

Vitamin E has been recommended to help scarring, and jojoba oil is a popular remedy to speed up wound healing. If you already have other skincare products in your routine but would still like to try the oil out, use a coin-sized amount as a spot treatment in the morning and at night on acne-prone areas to treat acne and acne scarring!

5. Get glowing skin with little wrinkles

If you’re seeing dullness in your skin, it’s often caused by dehydration. If you have fine lines and wrinkles, applying a few drops of jojoba oil to your face after cleansing reduces dullness and speeds up cell growth!

You won't need to rinse it off because it will be absorbed into the skin; it’s a great anti-ageing boost for a moisturised skin.

6. It can soothe eczema prone skin

Jojoba oil offers healing and anti-inflammatory effects. Dryness, flaking, itching, and associated symptoms may be reduced with topical treatment, and may be especially helpful for people who have inflammatory skin diseases like psoriasis and eczema.

Clearly, jojoba oil has been around for centuries and works for almost everything: from moisturising dry skin, dry lips, promoting hair growth, treating oily skin, minimising acne problems, healing wounds, providing anti-ageing defence, and so much more! It’s an essential ingredient that’s loved by many, and it can be used on a daily basis.

If you’re looking to get jojoba oil as part of your daily routine, you may opt for a 100% pure jojoba oil, or to look for it in ingredient lists found in serums, creams, masks or lotions.
