Myth VS Reality: Dry (and Dehydrated) Skin Edition

We’re here to share some Myth VS Reality content-
We first posted these as Instagram Stories back in January 2022, but it’s now here to stay on our blog!

This week, we’re sharing some myths about Dry & Dehydrated Skin, and how you can manage it.

1. The Myth: “If your skin is dry, that means it’s also dehydrated.”

Reality: Dehydration and dryness are two different things. Dry skin is a skin type, while dehydrated skin can happen to anyone (even those with oily or normal skin) if your skin is lacking water. Can you have both? Yes! But you can also have one or the other.

If your skin is dehydrated, you’ll most likely feel that your skin is tighter and irritated with breakouts, because it lacks water. Dehydrated skin can also be triggered by various environmental factors such as unprotected sun exposure, hot showers, excessive scrubbing, ageing, being in air-conditioned rooms for too long, or using the wrong products for your skin.

Having dry skin as a skin type means that your skin is lacking sebum, or natural oils. Your skin is usually dry all over and is in need of constant moisture. You may experience tightness, peeling, flaky, cracked and/or rough skin, with wrinkles or fine lines, and redness on your skin.

2. The Myth: “Drinking more water will fix my dry skin!”

Reality: Drinking sufficient amounts of water will definitely help for those with dehydrated skin, and for your overall health, but it won’t magically replenish the moisture levels of those with dry skin.

3. The Myth: “Apply more moisturiser to get rid of dry skin!”

Reality: If your skin has dry patches and flakes, applying moisturiser on top might clog it even more. Exfoliate first, and then apply your moisturiser. Applying too much can also clog your pores even further and cause breakouts, so be sure to apply appropriate amounts.

4. The Myth: “You shouldn’t exfoliate dry skin”

Reality: If you’re exfoliating harshly, tone it down a little! Exfoliating dry skin will help clear away any dry, flaky and dead skin cells, which will then make it easier for the skin to absorb creams and moisturisers.

To restore hydration in your skin, use deeply hydrating moisturisers and serums that contain hyaluronic acid, like Aura Nur’s Hyaluronic Boost'n Serum.
