Are Eye Creams A Scam?

Some skincare products are known to be essential for your everyday routine, such as cleansers and moisturisers. Yet, others are so controversial that it sparks a debate between many dermatologists and aestheticians- such as the use of eye creams

Why the recent controversy surrounding eye creams?

In the cosmetic industry, eye cream has long been the subject of a contentious dispute. However, it has recently been brought more to light thanks to social media platforms like TikTok and Youtube, where renowned  estheticians and influencers share their stance about eye creams and why they are so against it.
Cassandra Bankson, a medical aesthetician and online social media personality claims that certain eye creams are just “overpriced moisturisers” and “a marketing scam”. Other articles such as one written by Beauty Insider , also claim that “Eye cream is just face cream in a smaller jar” and all that you need is a “good moisturiser”.

What are the benefits of using eye cream?

Unlike other facial products, eye creams are typically thicker since they are designed specifically for the delicate skin around the eyes. Similar to the moisturisers you use on your face, eye creams have components that are good for hydrating the skin, minimizing the appearance of puffiness and dark circles, and protecting against UV rays and other environmental aggressors. Many also include anti-aging substances to reduce wrinkles, fine lines, and crow's feet.

Your daily skincare regimen can be improved by including an eye cream to lessen the look of  wrinkles as well as other skin issues like dryness, puffiness, dark circles, and pigmentation. When finding the right eye cream, there are specific ingredients you should be looking for in order to target your needs and concerns.

Because there are so few active oil glands in the skin around your eyes, moisturising elements like hyaluronic acid, squalane, and ceramides are crucial for attracting and retaining moisture.

To diminish the appearance of crow’s feet, choose an eye cream with retinol in a moisturising base and check the ingredient list for ceramides, dimethicone, glycerin, and oils.

While choosing an eye cream, you should also take into account things like your skin type, the skin condition you want to address, whether you are using it in the day, etc.
Below is a helpful table with common concerns in the eye area and what ingredients to look out for in eye creams to combat these issues:

Knowing between eye creams that work and those that don’t.

It's possible that puffiness and eye bags are genetically inherited. This means that no amount of eye cream will make them look less noticeable. The earlier someone begins to develop bags and puffiness, the more likely there is to be a hereditary component. They can also be caused by external factors such as inflammation triggered by UV exposure from the sun, stress, fatigue, and allergies.

In cases like these, adjusting your lifestyle such as drinking more fluids and sticking to a regular sleep schedule may remedy or reduce the appearance of eye bags and puffiness, instead of spending money on an eye cream.
There are certain eye creams that also claim to get rid of wrinkles entirely, which is a false claim as there is no magic ingredient that can stop the processes of aging. As such they can only reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Our verdict?

Eye creams do work and not all of them are a scam! Just be sure to do your research, read reviews and look at the ingredients list before splurging your money in one.

Like all skincare products, they also should be used consistently to achieve optimal outcomes.
